Parents Ask, Dr. Mittal Answers

Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most often.

The first dental visit should happen within 6 months of the first tooth erupting, or by your child's first birthday — whichever comes first. This "first tooth, first visit" rule allows us to detect early decay, provide fluoride protection, and most importantly, introduce your child to dental care before any fear or negative associations can develop.
Absolutely — dental anxiety is our specialisation. We use Tell-Show-Do technique, structured desensitisation, distraction screens, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation for anxious children. We never force treatment. If your child is not ready on a given day, that visit becomes a trust-building session, and treatment waits. This approach results in far better long-term compliance and no trauma.
The Indian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry recommends an orthodontic assessment by age 7. This does not mean braces at 7 — it means we identify problems that benefit from early intervention (crossbite, narrow palate, severe overjet) while the jaw is still most responsive to guidance. Most children begin braces between 12 and 14 years. Early assessment is free of charge at Dr. Mittal's.
Yes. We use digital radiographs which expose children to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. Lead aprons and thyroid collars are standard at every X-ray. We only take radiographs when there is a specific clinical reason — not as a routine procedure at every visit. The radiation dose from a dental X-ray is comparable to a few hours of background radiation from everyday life.
We offer three levels of sedation. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the gentlest option — the child stays awake and the effect wears off in 5 minutes with no recovery needed. Oral sedation (midazolam) produces a deeper relaxed state; recovery takes 2–4 hours at home. General anaesthesia (GA) is performed in a hospital with a specialist paediatric anaesthesiologist — all necessary treatment is completed in one session. We discuss each option in detail before any decision is made.
Yes, and this is an area we have invested significantly in. We have specific protocols for ASD (social stories, sensory-adapted environment, visual communication aids), cerebral palsy (modified positioning, bite blocks), and Down syndrome (cardiac-aware protocols, enhanced periodontal care). For children for whom cooperative care is not achievable, GA full-mouth rehabilitation under specialist anaesthesia is available.
We begin with a free video consultation before your trip to India. You share any existing records, X-rays or photos and we assess your child's needs and prepare a complete treatment plan with cost estimates. All appointments are scheduled around your travel dates so there are no wasted visits. Treatment begins on day one of your arrival. We provide full records to take home for follow-up with your local dentist.
Yes. We offer 0% interest EMI through major credit cards and Razorpay for orthodontic and larger treatment packages. Monthly instalments can be arranged for braces, clear aligners, and GA rehabilitation. Speak to our patient coordinator at your consultation for a personalised payment plan.
