My Child is Terrified of the Dentist. We Can Help.

Dental fear is one of the most common reasons children avoid care — and one of the most treatable. At Dr. Mittal's Kids & Family Dental Clinic, we specialise entirely in anxiety management for children: from structured behaviour-based techniques to certified conscious sedation. We don't push past fear. We dismantle it — visit by visit.

Why Children Develop Dental Fear

Dental anxiety in children is real, valid, and extremely common. Understanding the root cause is the first step to resolving it.

  • Past painful experiencesA previous frightening dental visit creates a lasting negative association that shapes every future appointment.
  • Second-hand anxietyChildren are highly attuned to adult emotions. If a parent or sibling expresses fear, the child internalises it before ever sitting in the chair.
  • Fear of the unknownNot knowing what will happen, what instruments will be used, or what sounds they will hear is profoundly unsettling for young children.
  • Sensory sensitivityFor some children, the lights, smells, sounds and textures in a dental environment can be genuinely overwhelming.
  • Loss of controlLying back with instruments in their mouth is a position of complete vulnerability. Many children resist because they feel they have no agency.
Our position on restraint

We never hold down, restrain, or force any child. If a child refuses, that appointment becomes a relationship-building session. Trust before treatment — every time.

What We Do Differently

Every element of our clinic and approach has been designed with the anxious child in mind.

Tell-Show-Do Protocol

Before we touch anything, we explain and demonstrate. The child sees every instrument, hears every sound, and understands exactly what will happen. This removes fear of the unknown and builds trust progressively.

Structured Desensitisation Programme

For children with significant anxiety, we offer a structured multi-visit programme — starting with just sitting in the chair, then counting teeth, then a gentle clean — building confidence at the child's own pace.

Child-Designed Clinic Environment

Soft lighting, child-friendly decor, distraction screens, and a calm atmosphere. Nothing like the clinical environments many adults remember from their own childhood.

Topical Anaesthesia Before Every Injection

We always apply a numbing gel before any injection and use the slowest delivery technique to ensure the child feels as little as possible. No surprises. No sudden pain.

Nitrous Oxide Conscious Sedation

For children who remain highly anxious, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas). The child stays awake and cooperative. The gas wears off within minutes. Dr. Mittal is certified in conscious sedation administration.

LASER Dentistry

Our LASER procedures significantly reduce the need for injections, drilling sounds, and vibration — removing the three most common fear triggers in one step.

The CCF™ Difference

Dr. Mittal uses the Child Confidence Framework™ — a structured protocol to observe anxiety levels, cooperation progression, and preferred reassurance strategies. The goal is not just completing today's treatment. It is a child who is confident in healthcare for life.

What Parents Can Do Before the Visit

  • Use positive languageAvoid words like "hurt," "needle," or "drill." Say "we're going to count your teeth" instead.
  • Role-play at homeLet your child be the dentist first. Pretend dental visits build familiarity and reduce fear of the unknown.
  • Stay calm yourselfChildren read parental body language immediately. Your composure is the single biggest predictor of their response.
  • Don't bribe with treatsIt signals something unpleasant needs compensating — which confirms the fear.
  • Bring a comfort itemA favourite toy or blanket provides sensory reassurance in an unfamiliar environment.
  • Book morning appointmentsChildren are freshest and least tired in the morning — cooperation is significantly better.

Frequently Asked Questions

We never force a child. If a child refuses, that visit becomes a relationship-building session. We sit, we talk, we play — we do not perform any procedure. Building genuine trust takes precedence over completing treatment on that day. This results in significantly better long-term compliance and far less trauma.
Yes. Nitrous oxide is safe, widely used, and approved for children from approximately age 3 and above who can breathe through their nose. The child stays fully conscious and responsive. There is no injection — just a small nasal mask. Effects wear off within 5 minutes and your child can return to their normal day immediately.
Yes — research consistently shows that forced dental visits worsen dental phobia and create long-term avoidance behaviour that can persist into adulthood. The short-term inconvenience of a slower approach is vastly outweighed by the lifetime benefit of a child comfortable with dental care. We always work at the child's pace.
