How Clear Aligners Work
Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, transparent trays that fit precisely over the teeth. Each tray is worn for approximately 1–2 weeks, moving the teeth incrementally toward the planned final position. A full course of treatment may involve 20–50 trays, depending on case complexity.
We use an iTero intraoral scanner (no messy impressions) to create a precise 3D digital model of the teeth. ClinCheck software then maps out the complete tooth movement plan before treatment begins — your teenager can see their projected final smile before they commit to treatment.
Invisalign Teen: Designed for Teenagers
Invisalign Teen is a version of the Invisalign system specifically designed for growing patients. Key features:
- Compliance indicators — Each Invisalign Teen tray has a small blue dot that fades from dark blue to clear as the tray is worn. This allows parents and the orthodontist to confirm the trays are being worn the required 20–22 hours per day.
- Eruption compensation — Space is built into the aligners to accommodate permanent teeth that are still erupting during treatment.
- Replacement trays — A set number of free replacement trays is included in the Invisalign Teen package, acknowledging that teenagers occasionally lose trays.
Advantages for Teenagers
- Aesthetics — Clear aligners are virtually invisible. Most classmates and teachers will not know the teenager is in orthodontic treatment.
- Removability for meals — No food restrictions. Remove aligners, eat anything, brush teeth, reinsert. Hygiene is far easier than with fixed braces.
- Removability for sports — Aligners come out for contact sports. A standard mouthguard can be worn without modification.
- Comfort — Smooth plastic is gentler on the cheeks and lips than metal brackets and wires.
- Fewer emergency appointments — No broken brackets, no loose wires. Emergencies requiring unplanned visits are rare with aligners.
Suitable Conditions & Limitations
Clear aligners are highly effective for mild to moderate orthodontic problems, including:
- Mild crowding and spacing
- Minor overbite and open bite correction
- Class I and some Class II malocclusions
However, severe skeletal discrepancies, significant rotations, and complex bite correction are still better addressed with fixed braces — we will advise honestly at the consultation whether aligners are the right choice for your teenager's specific needs.
The most important factor for success with aligners is compliance. The trays must be worn 20–22 hours per day. Teenagers who consistently remove trays will not achieve the planned result. We discuss compliance expectations frankly with both parent and teenager before starting.
Frequently Asked Questions
We typically schedule check-in appointments every 6–8 weeks. At each visit, we assess progress, distribute the next batch of trays, and confirm the teeth are tracking correctly to the plan. If correction is needed, refinement trays may be prescribed.
Invisalign Teen includes replacement trays in the package. If a tray is lost, your teenager should wear the previous tray (or advance to the next, depending on how recently the current tray was placed) and contact us to request a replacement. Do not go without a tray for more than 1–2 days.
Yes. The iTero scanner is a wand that takes thousands of photographs per second as it is moved through the mouth. It creates a full-colour 3D model in minutes with no impression material, no gagging, and no mess. Most teenagers find it significantly more comfortable than traditional impressions.
In India, Invisalign Teen typically costs somewhat more than metal braces and comparably to ceramic braces. The total cost depends on case complexity and the number of aligners required. We provide a full cost breakdown at the consultation with no hidden fees. Payment plans are available.
